The Best Peptide Skincare Products For Youthful Skin

The Best Peptide Skincare Products For Youthful Skin

Get ready for smoother, tighter skin with this powerhouse ingredient. As we age our skin is more prone to fine lines, wrinkles, lack of firmness, rough texture and dryness… If you have noticed any of these on your face and want to minimize their appearance, look no further than peptides—an ingredient loved by skincare experts for its ability to smooth, plump, and firm skin without causing irritation.  What do peptides do for the skin? Peptides are made of amino acid chains, the building blocks of protein in our skin and signal your skin to enter repair mode in order to produce more collagen and elastin—two proteins responsible for keeping skin smooth and firm offering a more lifted and contoured appearance. Some peptides also have anti-inflammatory benefits, which help to calm redness of the skin and reduce sensitivity. How to choose the correct peptide product for your skin Opt for a leave-on product Skip any products, like cleansers or masks, that get rinsed off and opt for a leave-on product instead such as a peptide-filled serum or moisturiser and apply it twice daily. Pair them with retinol Peptides are great anti-aging ingredients, but they don’t replace retinol. For optimal skin smoothing and firming results, you’ll want to incorporate both retinol and peptides into your daily routine. when it comes to the delicate area around your eyes however it’s best to opt for a peptide-infused eye cream/serum. The best acid's for your skin & when to use them

The best acid's for your skin & when to use them

Skin acids are little ingredient powerhouses that fight off everything from acne, oily skin, dark marks, fine lines, dullness, dryness, and more. But with so many different acids out there, how do you figure out which one to use? We’ve put together a guide for every age with their specific benefits and how to use them to benefit your skin concerns, below. In your 20’s Oily skin and adult acne are very real issues for many of us at this age – and so are the dark spots that often go with acne-prone skin. Salicylic acid: Gently works to reduce oiliness and clear out the dead skin cells that clog pores – the two major causes of acne. It’s also a pigmentation fighter and helps to reduce inflammation and redness. Try Nimue Blemish Control or Environ’s Sebu Tone Clarifyer.   In your 30’s This is the period in your life that you start to see the first real signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles. Things like hyperpigmentation and sunspots also might appear in your 30s. Retinoic acid: Derived from vitamin A, and well known as a hugely effective and powerful anti-aging dynamo. Accelerates skin cell turnover and collagen production, cleans pores, evens out skin tone and fades pigmentation. Best used at night. Try Dr Grandel’s Retinol Ampoules, Skin Affairs Anti-Ageing Serum or Environ’s Concentrated Retinol Serum 1. Glycolic acid: One of the best acids out there and a brilliant exfoliator, it will shrink pores, lighten dark spots, even out scars, lessen wrinkles, and keep your skin smooth, fresh and bright. Wash with Dr Grandel’s 2 in 1 Cleansing Foam every morning and evening and moisturise with Environ’s Alpha Hydroxy Night cream 2-3 times a week in the evening. In your 40’s This is when environmental pollutants start to take a toll on your skin, making antioxidants very important. Some of you may also develop more sensitivity to skincare products.  Ascorbic acid: The synthetic version of vitamin C that has antioxidant benefits to combat ageing, as well as the ability to fade dark spots, brighten skin and increase collagen production. Best to use in the morning (and use retinol at night). Try Nimue’s Multi-Rejuvenating Serum. Lactic acid: Gentle and effective, this is great for those with sensitive skin. It exfoliates and softens lines and wrinkles in a much less irritating way than other acids. Try Environ Bio-Botanical Revival Masque which has been nicknamed the “Facelift in a Jar” or Dr Grandel AHA Peeling Effect, two incredibly effective at-home peels.  In your 50’s Skin cell turnover significantly declines and age starts catching up with you in your 50s. As a result you may experience significant dryness, loss of elasticity and deeper expression lines. Hyaluronic acid: an amazing moisture booster that immediately plumps up the skin and makes it feel softer, improving the appearance of fine lines. Can be used at any age as the skin always needs to be hydrated. Try Skin Affair’s Hydraboost serum or Dr Grandel’s Elements of Nature Hyaluron Fluid – and seal hydration into the skin by applying a moisturiser directly afterwards. This can be done daily, morning and evening.

Mother's Day Gift Guide: 10 Ingredients for Skin that Really Work!

Mother's Day Gift Guide: 10 Ingredients for Skin that Really Work!

In the world of skincare, trendy new anti-ageing ingredients come and go but when it comes to tried and true actives that actually work - it’s a pretty finite list. Each of the ingredients listed below is sure to offer your skin a youthful boost in their own unique way depending on your age and skin type. Find out more about their benefits and where to find products that contain them & spoil mum with the best products from Deluxe Shop this Mother's Day. 1. Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen It’s a fact that sun exposure is one of the primary causes of all the signs of ageing so adequate, daily sun protection a MUST. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is the ultimate anti-ageing must-have because it blocks both UVA rays which cause ageing and UVB rays which cause burning. The recommended daily value is SPF 30, and it’s important to remember that reapplication throughout the day is also essential. You can find both mineral and chemical broad-spectrum sunscreens; the former work by sitting on top of the skin and deflecting the sun’s rays, the latter absorbs into the skin to prevent the rays from damaging the cells. It’s a matter of personal preference, though mineral options are less likely to irritate sensitive skin. Find it in Skin Affair SPF 15 Moisturiser with Blue Light Blockers or Environ RAD Mineral Sunscreen SPF15.  2. Ceramides The outermost layer of your skin is known as the skin barrier, and its primary role is keeping hydration in and all the irritants away. Ceramides are lipids that keep this barrier strong and healthy, sealing moisture into the skin. In terms of anti-ageing, the more hydrated your skin is, the more youthful it will look. They’re an effective ingredient for any skin type including eczema-prone skin types. Find ceramides in Dr Grandel Beautygen Renew Caps. 3. Collagen Collagen is one of the most important proteins in your skin, the foundation for keeping it strong and firm so it makes sense that collagen would be a great anti-ageing ingredient. Topically, it’s not an activity that can make a big difference, largely due to the fact that it’s a big molecule that is challenging to get into the skin. For best results try Dr Grandel Pro-Collagen Concentrate. 4. Glycolic Acid Part of a group of acids known as alpha-hydroxy acids, this one is distinct in having the smallest molecular size, so it can penetrate deepest into the skin. Glycolic acid features the traditional exfoliating benefits of any AHA, gently dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells to improve skin texture, tone, and pore size. Find it in the QMS Active Exfoliant and Nimue Active Gel. 5. Lactic Acid Another type of AHA, this is usually derived from milk and is generally gentler and less irritating than glycolic acid, says Linkner. It’s a common anti-ageing ingredient in both mild in-office peels and many at-home exfoliating products, helping to leave skin more even and radiant. Plus, unlike many other exfoliating ingredients, which can be drying if not used properly, “lactic acid has been shown to increase the natural moisturizing factors in the skin,” says Carqueville. Just keep in mind that it will make your skin more sensitive to the sun, warns Linkner, so you want to be extra diligent and on top of your sunscreen game when lactic acid is a part of your anti-ageing arsenal. Find it in the Nimue Active Gel. 6. Hyaluronic Acid Hyaluronic Acid is a fan-favourite in the hydrating ingredient world. It acts like a sponge, drawing water in and trapping it in the skin, so it not only moisturises but helps to plump up your skin and fill in fine lines. HA is a naturally occurring sugar in our body which we produce on our own up until we reach the age of around 20. It can hold up to a thousand times its own weight in water so just remember that in order for this anti-ageing ingredient to work most effectively, there needs to be moisture present. Be sure to apply it on either slightly damp skin, or to layer it with another moisturiser. Try Dr Grandel Hyaluron Ampoules or Hyaluron Balancer. 7. Jojoba Oil As popular as face oils have become, the concept can still be off-putting to some. But jojoba oil is one of the best skincare oils of the bunch. Derived from a nut-like pod of a plant, jojoba oil is biomimetic, meaning it acts as the oil naturally found in the skin. It’s non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores and it’s ultra-moisturising and soothing to dry, irritated, skin. Jojoba oil contains vitamin E too, which means it may have some antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Find Jojoba in Dr Grandel Oxygen Moisturiser and Skin Affair’s Organic Glow Serum. 8. Retinol Retinol, which is also known as vitamin A, is one of the most effective skin-transforming ingredients which targets fine lines, blemishes and sun damage. Retinol often gets a bad rep, only because it can cause redness or flaking skin however you can help minimise these unsightly side effects by working it into your routine gradually Because it’s rendered inactive when exposed to sunlight, be sure to save retinol for bedtime use only. Find it in Dr Grandel Timeless Retinol Balm. 9. Vitamin C The vitamin you take in order to boost your immune system also offers a trio of benefits for your skin. It is a great antioxidant, helping to neutralise the skin-damaging free radicals caused by exposure to environmental factors such as sun and pollution. It also interferes with the production of excess pigment in the skin, helping to fade spots and discolouration. And lastly, it helps to stimulate collagen production. We recommend Dr Grandel Vitamin Infusion Serum. 10. Squalane Squalene is a fatty molecule found in the skin that is highly versatile. Squalane is a plant-based alternative which comes from renewable sugarcane. It maintains skin's moisture barrier and hydration and is also an antioxidant that has anti-ageing properties for neutralising environmental damage. Find it in Skin Affair’s Organic Nourishing Cream Mask or Organic Light Moisturiser.

5 Sunscreen Myths to Stop Believing.

5 Sunscreen Myths to Stop Believing.

Summer dress season is in full swing, and with beach breaks on the horizon comes the task of selecting the right sunscreen. What SPF is necessary? And are chemical ingredients really dangerous? There are lots of rumours about sunscreen but it’s important to separate fact from fiction.  Myth 1: You have to wear SPF50 or higher  SPF, which stands for sun protection factor, is a measure of how long you can spend in the sun before burning. Wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 allows you to be outside 30 times longer without getting a sunburn. That means that someone who burns in 20 minutes without protection would be able to spend 600 minutes, or 10 hours, in the sun before turning red. If you put on sunscreen perfectly—applying a generous layer to all exposed areas of the face &  body—SPF 30 should be adequate. Try ELEMIS Dynamic Resurfacing Day Cream SPF 30. Myth 2: Sunscreen is waterproof There is no sunscreen that is truly waterproof. The best you can get is water-resistant for up to two hours, after which it needs to be reapplied. Make sure you check how long your sunscreen holds up in the water and towel off before thoroughly reapplying it. It’s also important to let it ‘set’ for 15 minutes so it doesn’t wash off when you get back into the water. Myth 3: Sunscreen is all you need to do to protect yourself from the sun Lathering up with sunscreen is not a licence to lie by the pool all weekend. Spending too much time in the sun, with or without sunscreen, can damage the skin, leading to premature ageing and skin cancer. Dermatologists recommend wearing sunglasses, a hat and protective clothing, as well as seeking shade and minimising outdoor time during the intense midday hours of 11am to 3pm.  It’s important to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVB and UVA radiation. All sunscreens filter the UVB rays (think B for burn), but not all sunscreens are good at protecting against UVA rays (A for ageing). Try Nimue SPF 40, a lightweight, moisturising sunscreen that provides high broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and assists to reduce and prevent visible signs of photo ageing. We also know infrared light, which very few sunscreens can screen for, can also damage the skin. Try Skin Affair’s Organic Daily SPF15 which contains natural blue light blockers. Get a free Skin Affair Organic SPF 15 with all orders over R750 until 20 October. Myth 4: The chemicals in sunscreens are harmful to humans Concern has been growing about the safety of the chemicals in sunscreens, leading to the proliferation of natural products. Chemicals can cause allergic reactions and some studies show they interact with human sex and thyroid hormones, though no risk to humans has been proven. If you’re still worried about the potential toxicity, you can opt for mineral sunscreens, which are just as effective and are often labelled as natural. Try Environ’s RAD mineral sunscreen SPF15 which is formulated with Shea Butter, the Environ RAD Shield Mineral Sunscreen SPF 15 is also very moisturising without being sticky or leaving a white cast. It also contains Vitamin E to further enhance moisture as well as provide antioxidant benefits, as well as tomato fruit extract, which absorbs UV light. Myth 5: You don’t need to wear sunscreen when it’s cloudy or you’re in the shade Harmful ultraviolet rays can pass through clouds, so it’s important to wear sunscreen daily regardless of the forecast. While UVB rays get filtered on cloudy days, UVA rays don’t vary as much. Even on a cloudy day, we’re still getting at least 80 percent of the harmful rays. When the UV index is three or higher, sunscreen is needed. And while seeking shade is smart, it can’t completely protect you from sunlight, which scatters and reflects. Try QMS ACTIVE GLOW SPF 15 Tinted Day Cream Enriched with vitamins this day cream is ideal for the active lifestyle; its UV filters protect against premature light-induced skin ageing while its clever tint is designed to work with every tone and its moisturising ingredients firm and smooth the skin.

Skincare 101: Peptides, uses and benefits for skin

Skincare 101: Peptides, uses and benefits for skin

This superstar skin ingredient is the perfect thing to mix into any anti-ageing skincare routine.  Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, but they're also the building blocks of peptides. Collagen itself is made of polypeptide chains. Collagen is a large molecule, so it's difficult to penetrate the skin's surface when applied topically in a collagen cream alone. Peptides are smaller, so they can penetrate skin more easily. Peptides also make up elastin and keratin, two proteins that are essential for the health of your skin and hair. More benefits of peptides for skincare: Peptides can stimulate skin to make more collagen and help to smooth fine lines and wrinkles Peptides have anti-inflammatory properties that could soothe irritation or redness. While peptides can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, they also can help make skin feel more taut, and increase firmness in the skin. We’ve narrowed down some of our favourite skincare with peptides from Deluxe Shop. Environ Peptide Enriched Frown Serum Enriched with a super-concentrated combination of peptides, this non-invasive serum helps to soften and improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine expression lines such as forehead furrows, frown lines and crow’s feet. ELEMIS Peptide 4 Night Recovery Oil This skin synchronising night cream-oil combines the hydration of a moisturising cream with the protection of an oil. Skin feels rebalanced and appears restored and replenished. GRANDEL Renew III rich A regenerating cream protecting collagen fibres and improving elasticity contains anti-age peptides, which enhance the dermatological repair processes and reduce the appearance of ageing. QMS Advanced Collagen Eye Lift Sheet Masks This triple action collagen eye sheet mask features the most advanced technology that combines native collagen fibers, peptides and pure collagen molecules, with hyaluronic acid to help renew the skin in only 20 minutes. Nimue Night Fader  A multi-functional night moisturiser with syntheisised peptides in a light base for uneven skin colouring. Helps to brighten the skin and regulate pigment formation. Dr Grandel Collagran Ampoules  Smoothing, stimulating and moisturising ampoules with a combination of active ingredients with properties similar to those of collagen as well as carrot extract and biopeptides, for the intensive care of demanding skin. What Vitamins actually do for your skin

What Vitamins actually do for your skin

Antioxidants are naturally occurring vitamins and minerals—like vitamins A, C, E, and green tea—that protect your skin against free radicals.  Free radicals are pesky little molecules in the environment that damage your skin by clinging to your collagen and weakening elasticity. They come from air pollutants, chemicals and cigarette smoke. Antioxidants neutralise those free radicals to protect your skin from damage.  Some antioxidants also brighten your skin, calm irritation, and even smooth fine lines. We've rounded up the best ones and where to find them. Best for Soothing: Green Tea  Green tea is filled with polyphenols that not only scavenge free radicals, but also work as an anti-inflammatory to accelerate wound healing. Try Environ Vita Enriched Colostrum Gel or Elemis Superfood CICA Calm Booster Serum, a bi-phase formula loaded, antioxidant-rich formula, to help leave the skin feeling soft and smooth.  Best for Anti-Ageing: VITAMIN A Vitamin A or Retinol is a miracle worker because it does so much for your skin: smooths fine lines, fills in wrinkles, improves skin texture, brightens skin, fades scars and dark marks, and drastically reduces acne. Try Dr Grandel Retinol Ampoules or Environ Retinol Concentrated Serum 1. Best for Moisturising: VITAMIN E Vitamin E is a natural anti-inflammatory, a strong shield against free radicals and premature ageing, and keeps skin soft and supple, which is the key to preventing scar formation. Try Skin Affair Organic Illuminating Hydrating Serum with Acmella (natural botox) and Vitamin E, Dr Grandel Elements of Nature Nutralifting Moisturiser or Environ Vita-Enriched Antioxidant Gel. Best for Brightening: VITAMIN C Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is pretty much the ultimate antioxidant for perking up dull, tired-looking skin. Just like green tea, it can calm and hydrate your skin, and similar to retinol, it boosts your collagen production to tighten fine lines and improve skin texture. Try Dr Grandel Vitamin Infusion Serum with Vitamin C, Pomegranate Flower and Mango Complex or Skin Affair Organic Glow Serum with rich antioxidants to protect against free radical damage. Get a free Skin Affair Glow serum valued at R399 with all orders over R750 until Monday 27 September 2021.

Protect your skin from Photoageing at different ages

Protect your skin from Photoageing at different ages

Get the lowdown on photoageing and a free retinol serum valued at R399 when you spend R750 until 16/09. Overexposure to the sun is the main cause of premature skin ageing - also known as photoageing. UVA rays from the sun are primarily responsible, but high-energy visible (HEVIS) light can also cause oxidative stress that damages cellular DNA. As a result, skin starts to form wrinkles, sag and develop pigmentation issues prematurely.  Ensuring skin is properly protected year-round, using superior sun care products and the correct skincare products, at different ages, can help to prevent and tackle photoageing. In your 20-30s  Early signs of photoageing start to show in your mid to late 20s, such as fine lines and mild blemishes. It’s important to start applying sun protection on a daily basis at a young age, to prevent long-term damage. We also recommend that you look out for suncare products that include protection from blue light such as Skin Affair’s Organic SPF15 Moisturiser which provides the ultimate prevention against sun damage and UV rays whilst moisturising the skin. Also look for skincare containing vitamin B3 to get ahead of sunspots. Skin Affair’s Brightening Serum visibly brightens, helps revive dull skin and targets dark spots caused by pollution & harmful UV rays. In your 30-40s Mild photoageing, smile lines, prominent pores and early age spots are common in your 30s. Protect skin against further photoaging with Dr Grandel’s UV LSF 30 Serum. Without having to forget the usual care products. This product comes into action when UV protection is needed and contains Vitamin E which protects the skin against free radicals. Look at skincare that contains Hyaluronic Acid which plumps up the skin and visibly reduces signs of ageing such as Skin Affair’s Hydra-Boost Serum. This serum consists of hyaluronic compounds for multi-depth hydration while plumping and smoothing the appearance of wrinkles. 50s and over  Advanced photoaging, deeper wrinkles, visible age spots and dilated capillaries are some of the skin concerns we can expect in our 50s and onward. Products containing peptides and retinol are amazing for skin of this age. GRANDEL Renew III rich is a regenerating cream protecting collagen fibres and improving elasticity. The cream contains peptides and nourishes and rejuvenates tired skin.   Skin Affair’s Anti-Aging Serum contains retinol and stimulates collagen synthesis for plumper looking skin.  Get a free Anti-Aging serum valued at R399 with all orders over R750 until 16 September 2021.
