The Brow Guide: Tint, Threading, Waxing and Laser
Brows frame the face more than any other feature, and small changes show. A tint makes fine hairs visible. Threading or waxing sets the shape. Laser clears the hair you never want back. Each does a different job, and the best brows usually use two or three of them together. Here is what each treatment does, how long it lasts, what it costs and who it is wrong for. Brow tint The simplest treatment here and where most people should start. A semi-permanent dye is brushed on and wiped off a few minutes later. It darkens the hair itself, including the fine downy hairs at the brow edge you cannot really see, which is why a tint makes a brow look denser rather than just darker. Brow Shaping & Tinting, from R129 includes the shaping, and the Brows Wax & Tint Combo at R199 does both in one visit. Lasts: four to six weeks, fading rather than stopping. Downtime: none. Aftercare: keep it dry for the rest of the day, then go easy on oil-based cleansers and acids on the brow, which strip the colour. Choosing the shade The rule of thumb: dark hair matches the brow to the roots of your hair, and fair or blonde hair goes one to two shades darker so the brow shows up. Grey brow hairs can be more resistant to colour, so mention it if yours are greying. If in doubt, go lighter. A tint that is too dark reads as drawn on, and it takes weeks to fade. The patch test is not optional Most professional brow tints contain PPD, the same chemistry used in dark hair colour. Reactions are uncommon but range from itching to swelling and, rarely, anaphylaxis, and an allergy can develop at any point even if you have been tinted many times. Supercilium sets out the protocol: a patch test at least 48 hours ahead, behind the ear or in the elbow crease, using the darkest shade because it carries the most PPD. New clients should be tested, and returning clients who have not been in for six months. Wrong for: a known PPD or hair dye allergy, active eczema or dermatitis on the brow, or anyone wanting coverage where there is no hair left. Tint colours hair. It cannot fill a gap. Threading Face Threading, from R169 lifts hair out by the root with a twisted cotton thread. Nothing touches the skin but the thread, so no surface skin comes away with the hair. That makes it the right choice if you use retinoids, have had a recent peel or react to wax. It is also precise: a therapist can take out single hairs and follow a line, which suits brows that need refining rather than clearing. Lasts: two to four weeks before regrowth shows. Downtime: none worth planning around; any redness settles within the hour. Aftercare: no makeup, active skincare or heavy sweating on the brow for the rest of the day. Wrong for: anyone who wants a wide area cleared quickly. Threading is slower over a large area, and it can sting more on a first visit. Waxing Waxing is faster over a wider area and catches the fine, pale hairs that are hard to see, which is why it is what the Brows Wax & Tint Combo at R199 uses. Warm wax is applied in the direction of growth and lifted against it, taking the hair from the root. It also lifts a thin layer of dead skin, which leaves the brow area smooth but means it is not for sensitised skin. Lasts: three to five weeks. Downtime: about an hour of pinkness. Aftercare: for 24 hours, skip makeup on the area, saunas, steam, sun and exfoliating acids. Wrong for: anyone using retinoids or prescription acne treatment, anyone who has taken isotretinoin in the last six months, and skin with a recent peel, sunburn or broken areas. Choose threading instead. Threading or waxing? If your skin is sensitive, you use retinoids or you want precise, hair-by-hair shaping, choose threading. If you want speed, clean edges over a wider area and a tint in the same appointment, choose the wax and tint combo. Either way, the shape matters more than the method. A good therapist maps the brow before anything comes off, because hair that is removed takes weeks to grow back. Brow laser Threading and waxing grow back. If the hair you keep removing sits outside the brow line, above it or between the brows, laser is the long-term answer. The Female Upper Brow Laser, from R299 treats above the brow, with monobrow options for the unibrow area. Laser is for the hair you never want back, not for the brow you are keeping. Laser targets the pigment in the hair, so dark, coarse hair responds best, and fine blonde, grey or red hair responds poorly or not at all. Hair grows in cycles and only actively growing hair responds, which is why laser is a course of sessions spaced weeks apart rather than a single visit. Lasts: permanent reduction once the course is complete, with occasional maintenance. Downtime: none; mild redness settles within hours. Aftercare: no sun, tanning or heat on the area for a few days, and no waxing, threading or tweezing between sessions, because laser needs the root in place. Trim if you need to tidy up. Growing brows back If your brows are thin from over-plucking rather than genetics, no salon treatment adds hair. Tint makes what is there look denser and shaping makes it look deliberate, but growing hair back is a slower, separate job. Start it now, put the tweezers away and let a therapist do the shaping while the hair comes back. A tint during the grow-out helps too, because it makes the new, fine hairs visible sooner. How often to book Brow tint: every four to six weeks. Threading: every two to four weeks. Wax and tint combo: every four to six weeks, which keeps the shape and the colour on one schedule. Brow laser: as a course, at the intervals your therapist sets, then maintenance only as needed. Rapidbrow serum: nightly, ongoing. Booking before the regrowth fully shows keeps the shape, because the therapist is following a line rather than finding it again. Before you book: who should check first Every reputable therapist asks about these at consultation. If you are not asked, that is information about the salon. A known PPD or hair dye allergy: no tint. Retinoids, prescription acne treatment, or isotretinoin in the last six months: threading only, no wax. A recent chemical peel, laser resurfacing, sunburn or broken skin on the brow: wait until it has healed. Active eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis on the brow. For laser: a fresh tan, recent sun exposure, or medication that makes your skin sensitive to light. Pregnancy: tell your therapist before any laser treatment. Most clinics postpone it until after. Several are a conversation with your doctor rather than a flat no. None of them are left off the consultation form. Three questions to ask before you book An over-shaped brow takes six weeks or more to grow back. These three questions avoid it. Will you map the shape with me before anything comes off? A good therapist agrees the line with you first. Do you patch test before a tint, and how far ahead? The answer should be at least 48 hours, for every new client. For laser: is my hair dark enough to respond, and how many sessions should I expect? A good therapist will tell you if laser is not right for you. Booking several things at once? Have brows shaped and tinted after a facial, not before: freshly exfoliated skin takes tint unpredictably and waxes badly. Which facial suits your skin helps you pick one. The Festive Nail Edit: Christmas and Party Nail Designs for 2026
December in South Africa is a strange season for nails. It is the height of summer, everyone is either at the coast or at a function, and the two things you want from a manicure are that it photographs well and that it survives three weeks of sunscreen, seawater and dishwashing. This is the edit: the festive designs worth booking for 2026, what each one costs you in wear time, and which of them actually work on a short nail. The 2026 festive palette The direction this year is richer and darker than the last few seasons. The pastel and milky nude wave has not gone anywhere, but the party end of the spectrum has moved decisively towards jewel tones and dimensional finishes. Jewel tones. Ruby, garnet, emerald and sapphire, all in a high gloss finish rather than a matte one. Velvet and magnetic finishes. A soft, brushed, cat-eye effect that shifts in the light. Espresso, deep plum, olive and bronze are the shades doing the most work. Dark metallics. Gunmetal and antique bronze in place of the usual silver and gold. Chrome and glazed. Still the most requested finish in the salon, and still the most flattering on a short nail. Milky nude and BB cream nails. The quiet option, and the one that goes with every outfit in the suitcase. Classic red, done properly Red is the festive default and it is a default for a reason, but "red" covers a lot of ground and the wrong one will fight with your skin rather than flatter it. Cool, blue based reds sit beautifully on fair to medium skin with pink undertones. Warm, orange based reds and brick shades are more forgiving on olive and deeper skin tones. Deep cherry and burgundy work on almost everyone and read as more expensive than a bright pillar box red, which is why they dominate the party season. If you want one red that does everything from an office lunch to New Year's Eve, take a deep cherry in a high gloss gel. A classy red on short nails is the single most useful festive manicure there is. Chrome, glazed and velvet finishes Chrome is applied as a fine powder buffed over a cured gel base and sealed, which is why it holds its mirror finish rather than dulling after a few days. It comes in every direction from a soft pearly glaze over a nude base through to a full mirror silver. For the festive season, the two versions worth asking for are a warm champagne chrome over a nude base, which is subtle enough for daytime and catches the light beautifully at night, and a proper mirror chrome in gunmetal or bronze if you want the nails to be the outfit. Velvet is the newer arrival. A magnetic pigment is drawn into a soft brushed pattern with a magnet while the gel is still wet, giving a finish that looks like brushed fabric and shifts as your hand moves. In a deep emerald or a plum it is the most festive finish available that is not glitter. Festive French tips The French tip has been steadily reworked for three seasons and the festive versions are the most fun of the lot. Rather than the traditional white edge, ask for: A red or cherry tip on a clear or milky base. Clean, graphic and considerably easier to wear than a full red. A chrome tip, in champagne or silver, on a nude base. A micro French, where the tip line is drawn very fine. This is the version that suits short nails best. A double French, with a thin metallic line under a colour tip. The advantage of any French over a solid colour is regrowth. As the nail grows out the design stays balanced, so you buy yourself an extra week before it starts to look untidy. Nude and minimal, for people who do not want festive nails Not everyone wants to arrive at a work function with emerald chrome talons. The quiet version of the festive manicure is a milky, slightly sheer nude, sometimes called a BB cream nail, buffed to a high gloss. It suits every skin tone, it goes with everything, and because the colour is so close to the natural nail the regrowth is nearly invisible. If you want one manicure to carry you through December without a refill, this is it. Add a single accent nail in chrome or a fine metallic line if you want a small nod to the season. Green, gold and the traditional palette Traditional Christmas green and gold has grown up considerably. The version that works now is a deep forest or emerald in a glossy gel, with either a single gold chrome accent nail or a very fine gold line at the cuticle rather than a full glitter tip. What to avoid is the literal interpretation. Snowflakes, holly and Christmas tree art photograph badly at close range and date immediately. If you want a motif, keep it to one nail and keep it abstract. Short nails and gel overlay: what actually works Most people asking for festive nails are working with a short natural nail, and a good deal of the inspiration online is photographed on extensions. These are the designs that translate: Solid deep colours. A short nail in cherry or emerald looks intentional and expensive. Chrome and glazed finishes. Arguably better on short nails, because the light catches a smaller, flatter surface more cleanly. Micro French tips. The fine line keeps the nail bed looking long. Single accent nails. One detail rather than ten. What does not translate is detailed nail art, ombre across the full nail, and anything relying on length for its shape. If you want the longer look for a specific event, a gel overlay adds strength to your own nail without extension, and acrylic extensions add the length. Glitter, and how to take it off without wrecking your nail Glitter gel is the most requested festive finish and the most damaging one, not because of the glitter but because of how people remove it. Glitter gel is dense, it resists acetone, and picking or peeling it takes layers of your natural nail with it. Two ways to avoid the damage. Either keep glitter to one or two accent nails so the removal is quick, or book a professional soak off rather than doing it at home. If you are going to remove it yourself, file the top coat off first so the acetone can get in, wrap each nail, and give it a full fifteen minutes before you touch anything. Whatever you do, do not peel it. A December of peeled glitter gel is a January of thin, flexible nails. Festive toes It is sandal season, which makes December the one month of the year when a pedicure is not optional. Toes take colour differently to fingers, and the shades that look best are the ones that read as saturated from a distance: deep red, burgundy, emerald, or a clean bright white against a tan. Gel on toes also lasts considerably longer than on fingers, usually four to six weeks, because toenails grow more slowly and take less abuse.
